History

April 1953   Shoghi Effendi, the Guardian (head) of the Bahá’í Faith, announces that the first European Bahá’í house of worship should be built, in the region of Frankfurt.
   
1956   After an architectural contest the design by Teuto Rocholl is approved.
   
1957   The site at Langenhain/Taunus is selected from some 120 possibilities.
   
May 1958   The model for the temple is unveiled to press and public after long and though negotiations with the authorities.
   
Nov. 1958   Renewed difficulties for construction project from the authorities.
   
Dec. 1959   After extensive negotiations the site is registered to the Bahá’í community.
   
April 1960   Final approval for the building project.
   
20. Nov. 1960   Hand of the Cause of God Amelia Collins lays the foundation stone.
   
April 1961   The excavation work, rock blasting and foundations are completed.
   
May 1962   Installation of the prefabricated lower and medium pillars and concreting work of the lower structural  rings.
   
Sept. 1962   The pillars, concreting work of the higher structural rings and installation of 540 roof parts are completed.
   
16. Nov. 1962   Topping-out ceremony
   
June 1963   Glazing work, pillar lights, roof elements and the mosaic work are placed.
   
4 July 1964   Amatúl-Baha Ruhiyyih Khanum (widow of Shoghi Effendi, who died in 1957) dedicates the house of the worship to the unity of God, the unity of  religions and the unity of  humankind.
