The United Kingdom's National Bahá'í Centre is situated at 27 Rutland Gate in the Knightsbridge district of London, not far from many of the main tourist attractions and shopping areas. The building is significant not only because of its obvious administrative functions but also because it was the place from where the Guardian's funeral cortege departed in 1957 and site of the first business meeting of the Universal House of Justice in 1963.

In recent years the importance of the Centre has increased as the Bahá'í community has developed its relations with a variety of other agencies and a major refurbishment was therefore undertaken. Visitors will be impressed by the new decor and the increased functionality of the building - for example, it boasts a full and conveniently located collection of books and other items for sale. However, please bear in mind that the primary purpose of the offices and their staff is to serve the administrative needs of the national community.

The first map shows the location of the Centre relative to nearby Hyde Park and the Royal Albert Hall, the principal venue for the 1963 Bahá'í World Congress. The second map provides enlarged detail of Rutland Gate which has two access points from Kensington Road

The nearest underground (tube, subway, metro) station is Knightsbridge, less than a mile from the Centre. Like Heathrow Airport and Arnos Grove - the station for Shoghi Effendi's Resting Place - this station is on the Piccadilly Line and it makes a convenient stopping off point for those who have time to break a journey to the New Southgate Cemetery.

Visitors using this means of public transport should exit the station onto Knightsbridge and make their way left, or west, across Brompton Road and towards Kensington Road. If transport is required, taxis can be readily hailed in this area and almost any bus travelling in the desired direction will be suitable. Those happy to continue on foot are best advised to use the steps labelled "Knightsbridge - North Side" and, on exiting the station, to continue straight ahead (west) along Knightsbridge. The opening of Rutland Gate is opposite the end of the Household Cavalry barracks - of the two entrances the second is perhaps to be preferred - and number 27 is some way in on the lefthand, or eastern, side. Entry for visitors is by the main door where a video camera system is in operation.

The telephone number for the Centre is 020-7584-2566 from within the UK or +44 20-7584-2566 if dialling from abroad. The building is normally closed during weekends and is closed to all during meetings of the National Spiritual Assembly.
