Derby unveils
unique Multi Faith Centre.
|
After a decade of planning, fundraising
and construction, a spectacular Multi Faith Centre (MFC)
has been completed at the University of Derby. It is the
only purpose-built centre of its kind in Europe and only
the second such building anywhere in the world.
The building is distinct from all traditional
places of worship. Its function is to allow people of different
faiths, or no particular faith to use a shared space to
pray, meditate, explore varying viewpoints and have dialogue
with each other - all in an atmosphere of mutual respect.
The nature of the site, the curved exterior and angular
vertical slabs give the impression of a natural structure
emerging from the earth. Walking along the paths onto the
flat roof amidst a garden of alpine plants, delightful views
of the Derbyshire countryside can be appreciated. Inside
there are meeting rooms, a library, an unusual meditation
area, a reading room, offices and a kitchen.
The Derby MFC Trust was formed with support
from the representatives of nine major religions - Bahá’í,
Buddhist, Christian, Hindu, Join, Jewish, Muslim, Sikh and
Zoroastrian. The Bahá’í community has supported the project
from its inception and was the first faith community to
pledge a donation, promising £50,000 over 5 years.
The Centre is already receiving evidence
of the need for better multi faith understanding. A leading
D.I.Y. store, some County Councils and the Armed Forces
have all been in contact for information and advice on how
to provide for the needs of their staff of different faiths.
The MFC and the multi faith ideal are real
indications that our society is changing. People are showing
an interest in faiths other than their own and are beginning
to appreciate their value.
